Finding Happiness Through Gratitude: A Story of Unexpected Giving

Have you ever felt like you were empty and had nothing to give to others or the world? This feeling of inadequacy can be a heavy burden to carry, leading to stress, anxiety, and a sense of hopelessness.

However, has anyone ever told you that even amid your own challenges, you possess a unique strength – the ability to offer hope to others and give happiness?

There is a beautiful story that illustrates this. The story is of a young Kenyan boy called John Thuo, who was a homeless orphan in Nairobi. John, accustomed to begging on the streets, approached a lavish car for money. John thought he was poor and the person in the car was rich. He thought that he had nothing to give but could only beg, and the person in the car had lots and could give. To his surprise, the lady being driven in the car, Gladys Kamande, was in far greater need. Gladys, suffering from severe lung disease, was struggling to breathe and had an oxygen machine with her to help keep her alive.

This encounter profoundly shifted John’s perspective. He realized that despite his own hardships, he possessed something invaluable: the gift of compassion, the gift of empathy and the gift of giving someone else hope. He comforted Gladys, offering words of encouragement and sharing the little money he had earned that day. His gesture of kindness led to John being adopted by Gladys, and having his education paid for. Today John is a university graduate. This story highlights the power of gratitude.

When we shift our focus from what we lack to what we have – our health, our loved ones, and the ability to breathe and see – we cultivate a sense of appreciation, which brings positivity and upliftment.

Giving, not just receiving, can be a powerful source of happiness. Acts of kindness, whether big or small, can bring a sense of purpose and fulfilment.

Perhaps you’re feeling burdened by stress or anxiety. Remember John’s story. Consider how you can offer support to others, even in small ways. A listening ear, a helping hand, or simply expressing gratitude for the blessings in your own life can bring unexpected joy and peace.
